The Mambo Foundation has recently carried out their first Annual General Meeting and voting for the 2006-2007 Board of Directors on 1 July 2006. The votes have been tallied and based on the votes cast by the membership, the new Board of Directors will be as follows:

Andrew Eddie Says Goodbye but not Farewell

Joomla! core team member Andrew Eddie has resigned from the project. Andrew, who has been project leader and a long-time contributor, recently announced his intentions to the team.

Project lead developer Johan Janssens said he wanted to recognise Andrew for his leadership, mentoring and commitment to the project during its Mambo and Joomla! days.

Andrew Eddie, who had been working as Joomla! project director, came to the project in its Mambo state in 2003 and replaced its lead developer Robert Castley in October 2004. Andrew, who lives in a regional town in Queensland, Australia, was the driving force behind the award-winning 4.5.0+ releases.

"There is no doubt that Andrew has steered this open source project through periods of amazing growth and success — and we are better for his contributions", Johan said. "The good news I can give is that Andrew has agreed to continue to contribute to the project within a working group. We are very pleased he will still be around the project but in a less demanding and more creative role."

With the announcement of Andrew's resignation the core team has been taking the opportunity to make some organisational changes. The core team has entrusted Johan, Shayne Bartlett and David Gal to be responsible for delivering this process.

"We will be making some more announcements about the way forward for Joomla!", Johan said. "Given the forthcoming release of Jooma! 1.5 beta, there is much to do."

Team Mambo would like to announce the availability of the Second public Release Candidate for the new Version 4.6 of the Mambo Open Soure CMS. The Release Candidate comes after an extended RC1 period during which the Team took feedback from a large number of users and made enhancements to the system. The RC2 release includes a number of significant changes which the Team wishes to evaluate before going to a final Production Release.
You should note that while these changes includes enhancements to improve stability and solve problems reported during the RC1 period, the RC2 release also includes new features and may reveal new issues which will require additional work before the final release. The text is an introductory one and focused primarily on NON-PROGRAMMERS. It reads much like the manual that should be in the Joomla! online documentation, but isn't yet. It is true that you can muddle through the Joomla! program and get most things figured out, but this book will help you do it quicker. As a user of Joomla! from the very beginning of its inception and long time user of its ancestor, Mambo, I wish I had something like this to take me by the hand and start me off when I first began. Everything is all in a nice tidy little package which can be referenced again and again as needed. I even learned a thing or two I didn't know before by reading this. This book is a great investment for anyone wishing for a thorough introduction to Joomla! Open Source CMS.
But, the information is readily available on the Joomla! website and goes no further in explaining things than the Joomla! website does. Not the best, but useful just the same.

Earning Money From Your Joomla

There are various types of advert that can be used to earn money from your website. If your site has a lot of visitors, it can be very worthwhile using discreetly integrated advertising to 'monetize' your website content.
There are basically 3 levels of advertising: Pay-per-impression (CPM), pay-per-click (CPC), and pay-per-action (CPA, CPL, CPS).
Pay-per-impression pays you a certain amount for every 1000 times an advert is displayed to your site visitors. The payout is low, but you can be sure of a certain level of return - based on the number of visits your site receives per month. Also known as CPM (Cost per 1000)
Pay-per-click pays you a certain amount every time someone clicks on an advert on your site. The payout is higher than pay-per-impression, but you can't be sure how many visitors will actually click on the adverts. The more relevant the ads are to the page content, the more likely the visitor is to click on an ad. Also known as CPC (Cost per click)
Pay-per-action has the highest payout, but you only get paid if the visitor you refer goes on to perform some pre-defined action, such as placing an order on the target site. Unless the ads you server are very closely related to the subject of your website, the chances of this happening are pretty slim, so you would need to have a very high level of website traffic (visitors) to make this worthwhile. Also known as CPA (Cost per action), which in turn can be divided into CPL (Cost per lead) and CPS (Cost per sale).
On balance, pay-per-click is probably the easiest way to start earning money from your website quickly. It won't make you rich, but every little helps!
One very quick and easy way of earning money through relevant advertising, is the hugely popular Google Adwords programme. You just sign up for an adsense account, specify some basic details about your site, and Google will generate some code for you. Simply place the code on your site to start earning money every time someone clicks on the adverts (or use a module such as this one if your site is based on mambo or joomla).
The good thing about adwords is that the adverts that are displayed are automatically selected to be relevant to the content of the page they appear on. This makes the ads much more appealing to your site's visitors. The downside is that the payout is not that high - generally just one to a few US cents per click.
Another alternative, is using an advertising agency. The principle is similar to adwords, but you choose specific adverts from a range offered to you, rather than the ads being automatically generated depending on the page content. The payout per click is generally higher than with Google, but the range of adverts and their relevance will be more limited, so your CTR ('click through rate' - ratio of clicks to visitors) might be lower.
If you can find individual affiliate programs with a high degree of relevance to your site, this can generate an impressive stream of income. For example, if the visitors to your site are interested in Joomla, you could try a scheme like the Rocket Theme template club, or iJoomla Magazine.

AdSense and YPN on Joomla

Joomla is the coolest open source content management systems around now. Joomla come with default component and module for banner management, however features provided by this component are very basic. The banner module shows the banners at the specific location configured from admin console. You can setup multiple banners and these banners (you can use it for AdSense or ypn ) are shown in rotation.

However with default banner module major deficiency is having more than one banner on the site. Its said that there is way to copy the banner module and be able to have more than one banner being displayed on site. Still its near impossible to specify particular AdSense or ypn ad at specific banner.
Other deficiency which I think is major one is inability to be able to place AdSense or yahoo yp ads in the content itself. There are some open source mambots/component/modules available which help doing it. The Yahoo YPN mambot is very good for showing Yahoo YPN ads inside the content item. It has features to have ads shown on all content items or user can select manual placements.

Community Builder 1.0 Stable released

The stable release of 1.0 is not only a stability release fixing many (mostly minor) issues identified in our RC2 code. It is also a security release as some related issues have been also identified and rectified. All CB installations are strongly encouraged to upgrade immedeately to secure their sites. As a side note, CB 1.0 stable has been tested with Joomla 1.5 (beta) for compatibility. The CB Core Team would like to thank the developers (Beat & JoomlaJoe), the test team (headed by Trail) and all Joomlapolitans for their patience and understanding during this tedious and frustrating process.

Complete the following steps to enable search engine friendly URL's for Joomla.
1) Confirm that your web hosting company support's Apache and mod_rewrite.
( most web hosting providers do support this functionality )
2) Access your web host using an FTP client, I would recommend using smartftp.
3) Navigate to the root directory or Joomla installation directory.
4) Select the htaccess.txt file and rename it to .htaccess
5) Now Access the Joomla administrator console
6) Select the Global Configuration item.
7) Select the SEO tab
8) Enable Search Engine Friendly URLs
9) A popup box will now appear to confirm you have renamed the htaccess.txt to .htaccess
10) When you view your web the URL's will now look like http://www.site.com/content/view/1/2/ or http://www.domain.com/Section_Name/Categoryname/Item_Name/

What if I use the built in Joomla SEF

Again SEF is a difficult subject to cover and is open to debate. The built in Joomla SEF functionality can and will deliver the results you require. For example type the keyword Joomla in Google.com and you will see both Joomla.org and mamboportal.com both rank highly for the keyword but one of the main disadvantages when using the built in SEF is you lack the functionality and control over the URL's parameters. Also note joomla is one of the big players in the community and therefore it's position in Google is guaranteed.

J!oogle is a fully integrated Joomla! component that utilises Google's Web API to conduct web searches. The results are displayed through Joomla! (not a wrapper). Edit the CSS file to change the look and feel to suite your site. From Joomla!'s admin you can set the defaults for the advanced search features including Language.

Additionally you can switch off Advanced Search feature in the front end, thus forcing your own set of criterea to all searches. You do need a Google Account (which costs nothing), and a Google Key (comes with the account). The only restriction is that Google restricts te searchs to 1000 per day.

So what’s so great about RSS feeds ?
When a user visits your web site they expect to see new and relevant content and the same can be applied to the search engine bots who visit your site on a daily basis. The fact is search engines expect to see new and fresh content and your search engine ranking can be effected based on how upto date your content is.
This is where RSS feeds play a key role. If you include 2 or 3 well respected RSS feeds from high ranking sites which includes content relevant to your site then the SERP's will reward you. The key is not to fill your site with hundreds of RSS feeds and hope to get a number one position in Google because this will not happen. RSS feeds are designed to compliment and enhance your existing Joomla site content.
Do your research and find web sites who offer quality RSS feeds which has some direct relevance to your web site subject matter. Once you have found the RSS feeds add them to specific sections, categories of your site. So for example you have a topic which covers web hosting for joomla then you could include a feed from a respected hosting forum or site. If possible try and add the feeds to categories or topics which are relevent to feeds coming into your site.

Syndicate your content
We have talked about including content specific RSS feeds within your web site but another approach is to syndicate your content across other web sites. This can be achieved in a number of different ways.

Activate your Syndicate module.
You can do this from the Joomla administrator console which will enable users to click on the relevant RSS feed button and include your content on there web site. The benefit of doing the above is that the robots will index the site where your xml feed appears and following the links to your site therefore improving your search engine position based on link backs and relevance.

Submit your RSS feeds
The next approach is to submit your site to a growing number of XML feed sites who accept and publish XML feeds which are then distributed across hundreds of web sites on the net. If your XML feed gets accepted then you may attract lots of new traffic and your position across the search engines will increase.

You have no doubt seen them and more that likely clicked on them but you may be asking - how do I get them on my site and let the money start flowing in?

First of all you need to create an adsense account at Google. To do that just click on the google banner over there on the left. Its very easy to do.

Then you need a way of displaying your ads on your Joomla site.

This is done through a module. You have a couple of choices here but you can't go wrong with the excellent modules from Joomlaspan. Thats what we use on this site.

They even have a revenue sharing version that allows you to split your income with your content providers.

You are allowed a maximum of 3 banners on any page under google rules.

Once you have the module installed, change the Google Adsense Client ID in the module settings.

Decide what size google ad you are going to use and where you are going to display them. Set the module position.

Set the colours of your ads to match the link and content text colours of your site

You can make copies of the module and display them in different positions.

Don't forget to published the module.

The more traffic you have the more money you can make - you might expect a 1% click through rate for a content rich site with a range from 5 to 20 cents per click or more depending on your market and keywords. You do the maths.

You will notice a field in the module parameters called alt ads. These can be displayed when google has no paying ads to display. You have a few choices with this but the one that I use at the moment is AlternateURL.

All you have to do is is sign up for an account there and get an Alturl code to insert into the adsense module.

SQL Injection Vulnerability

Retrgod has discovered a vulnerability in Mambo & Joomla, which can be exploited to conduct SQL injection attacks.
Input passed to the “Name” field when submitting a web link isn’t properly sanitised before being used in a SQL query. This can be exploited to manipulate SQL queries by injecting arbitrary SQL code.
The vulnerability has been confirmed in Mambo version 4.5.3h and has also been reported in version 4.6rc1. Other versions may also be affected.

The name Joomla is a phonetic spelling for the Swahili word "Jumla", which means "all together" or "as a whole". It was chosen as the entire team behind Mambo was unanimous in their commitment to protecting the interests of the project and community.
This name was chosen from thousands of recommendations by the community, and even went through an arduous review session by branding and marketing professionals who also felt that Joomla was the best choice of the lot. The Joomla! logo consists of the logotype and the mark. The mark represents what Joomla! is about...a community coming together as one. The mark is made up of four "J's" rotated and linked together that represent the community coming together as one. This logo has been developed to promote high visibility of the mark balanced with clear legibility of the name. The relationship (size, positioning, etc.) of these elements should never be altered in any way.
Whenever possible, the logo should appear in it's full color horizontal gel version. When the gel version cannot be used, a solid color version is available.

Backing Up and Upgrading Joomla!

Before undertaking an Upgrade or Conversion, it is extremely important that you backup your site Database and if possible, also you site files. While we try to ensure that an Upgrade or Conversion process is relatively straightforward, we cannot garuantee that this will always be the case for every user. So it is imperative that users take protective measures in case they face problems after the Upgrade or Conversion.Upgrading from any version of Joomla! 1.0.x to 1.0.9, simply involves overwriting your current sites files, with the files in the proper Patch Package that applies to your site. This is also the case for those users who are currently using a 1.0.9 Beta version. So if you are running Joomla! 1.0.5, you will need the 1.0.5 to 1.0.9 Patch Package.
This can be done by either uncompressing the Patch Package and then using an FTP client to transfer these files to your server and overwriting existing file. If you find errors after the process, ensure that all files were properly transferred. There have been verified reports of some FTP clients not properly transferring files across to a server - without notifying the user of such a problem.
If your Web Provider gives you access to your site via some sort of Web Admin panel like CPanel or Plesk, you can use the syetems file manager to upload the Patch Package file to your server and then extracting the package file and overwriting all the files on your server.
